One of the first treatments our providers may recommend to treat your gum disease is scaling and root planing. Scaling and root planing removes harmful bacteria and plaque from both the tooth surfaces and roots to reduce your periodontal disease and begin the healing process.

  • Scaling: In scaling, we remove plaque and tartar (dental calculus) from the tooth surface.
  • Root Planing: This step involves cleaning the roots of the teeth, smoothing them to remove bacterial toxins.

The goals of scaling and root planing are to remove bacteria, plaque and tartar, and to halt the progress of the disease. While most scaling and root planing treatments can be completed comfortably without an anesthetic, our dentists can offer several anesthetic and other comfort options to make certain that you feel at ease during your treatment. The scaling and root planing treatment may be split up into more than 1 appointment, in which we treat one section of the mouth at each appointment.

Scaling and root planing may be combined with other types of periodontal therapy, such as antibiotic treatment. For most patients, scaling and root planing is enough to prevent periodontal disease from progressing further. Gum Disease Treatment

There are a variety of periodontal treatments available to fight the harmful bacteria in your mouth and begin the healing process. When you visit Kingston Dental Associates, our providers will carefully examine your entire mouth to determine which treatment or combination of treatments will be most beneficial to you.

Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is a degenerative condition primarily caused by bacteria found in plaque. The bacteria inflame and infect the gum tissues, and when left untreated, the gums can eventually begin to pull away from the teeth. Untreated periodontal disease can result in bone loss, tooth loss and gum tissue recession.

If your gums are swollen, red or tender, or if your gums bleed easily, you may have periodontal disease. Other common symptoms of gum disease include loose teeth, painful chewing, persistent bad breath and receding gums that make your teeth appear longer than normal. Following an exam at our office, our dentists and team will be able to determine whether you suffer from periodontal disease.

Periodontal Maintenance

After you have completed your gum disease treatments, our providers will schedule a series of regular appointments to help prevent the disease from returning to your mouth. Periodontal maintenance allows us to monitor the condition of your mouth and help you keep a healthy smile on your face..

If your gums are tender, red or swollen, or if they bleed easily, you may suffer from periodontal disease. Periodontal disease, which is also known as gum disease, is a degenerative condition caused by bacteria in plaque, which accumulate on the teeth. When not treated, periodontal disease can result in the loss of teeth, gum tissue and bone.

While gum disease is not curable, we can treat the condition and keep it under control to protect your oral health. Our dentists can provide periodontal maintenance to help treat periodontal disease and prevent the serious effects of the condition.

Periodontal maintenance involves visiting our office on a regular basis, typically once every three to four months, for a professional cleaning. These treatments include thorough cleanings both above and below the gumline, removing plaque, tartar (hardened plaque, also called dental calculus), and bacteria to prevent the condition from worsening.

Prophylaxis (Deep Dental Cleaning)

If you have a less severe form of gum disease, we may recommend that you receive a prophylaxis treatment, or deep dental cleaning. This treatment is designed to clear harmful bacteria and tartar from your mouth so that you can begin to recover your oral health.

Prophylaxis involves a more intensive cleaning routine than regular dental cleanings. Even if you have perfect oral hygiene habits, it is impossible to protect the sections of your teeth that lie below the gumline. Prophylaxis removes the tartar and plaque that builds up below the gumline and in areas of your mouth that are difficult to reach.

Our providers will scale your teeth and polish them to make it smoother and less likely to attract bacteria and other harmful deposits in the future. This helps prevent gum disease from worsening and begins the healing process to restore your oral health. Our dentists may also take the opportunity to check your mouth for any other problematic developments below the gumline, such as tooth decay.
