Your third molars, or wisdom teeth, are usually the last teeth to develop and erupt in your mouth. Because they are located at the back of the mouth, they often become impacted, or stuck, and cannot emerge properly. This leads to a variety of problems, including infection, crowding and changes to the alignment of your other teeth. Our oral surgeon, Dr. Edward Drescher, provides wisdom teeth removal to resolve this problem and restore your oral health. There are several types of impaction that may occur:
- Soft tissue impaction – this occurs when there is not enough room to allow the gum tissue to retract in order to properly clean the tooth.
- Partial bony impaction – this type of impaction occurs when the tooth is able to partially erupt but is not able to function properly when chewing and cannot be adequately cleaned.
- Complete bony impaction – this type of impaction occurs when there is no space for the tooth to erupt and it remains embedded in the jawbone. Surgical treatment is required to deal with this type of impaction and remove the tooth.
